AFCA’s latest annual review shows delays and denials remain the pressure points for policyholders

The Australian Financial Complaints Authority’s latest annual review has delivered a measured but important warning for the life insurance sector: overall complaint numbers moved only slightly higher in 2025-26, but the issues most closely connected to claim outcomes rose more sharply.
For families relying on cover at a stressful time, that distinction matters more than the headline total.

AFCA reported 1,561 life insurance complaints received for the year to 30 June 2026, up 3% on the previous year. Income protection remained the most complained-about life insurance product, with 599 complaints and a 13% annual increase. Term life insurance accounted for 379 complaints, while total and permanent disability cover accounted for 302. Funeral plans also increased from a low base, with 127 complaints recorded.

The more telling shift was in the type of issue being escalated. Complaints about denial of claim rose to 292, while delay in claim handling increased to 260. By contrast, disputes about incorrect fees, premiums or charges fell to 187. A complaint is not the same as a finding that an insurer has acted incorrectly, but AFCA data is still a useful indicator of where consumers are experiencing friction after an issue has not been resolved internally.

For policyholders, the practical lesson is that life insurance should not be assessed only by the benefit amount. The claims pathway, definitions, waiting periods, exclusions, evidence requirements and communication standards can all influence how the policy operates in real life. This is particularly important for income protection, where a claimant may be trying to maintain household cash flow while medical, employment and financial information is assessed.

Cover held inside superannuation deserves particular attention because the member may be dealing with both the trustee and the insurer. Understanding life insurance through superannuation can help explain why claims may involve fund rules, beneficiary arrangements and insurer assessment processes rather than a single simple payment decision.

There are also broader industry implications. Recent regulatory attention on service standards, claims handling and the Life Insurance Code of Practice means insurers are under pressure to show that basic administration is reliable, not merely that products are available. Clear policy records, accurate premium calculations, timely updates and transparent reasons for decisions are not minor operational details; they shape trust in the system.

Consumers reviewing their cover may wish to keep current policy schedules, note who owns the policy, understand how to make a claim and check whether their beneficiaries or nominations remain appropriate. Where a dispute arises, the usual pathway is to first raise it through the insurer or fund’s internal complaints process before escalating externally if the issue is not resolved within the required timeframe.

The latest APRA life insurance performance statistics suggest Australia’s life insurance sector remains on firmer ground than during the more volatile years of pandemic disruption, elevated claims pressure and rapid premium repricing. Australians considering life insurance are set to receive stronger protection around the use of predictive genetic test results, in a reform designed to reduce one of the more difficult barriers to seeking cover.
